Acorn in Shadow (Charcoal Still Life Study)

Acorn in Shadow (Charcoal Still Life Study)

This charcoal drawing is a quiet study of form, texture, and weight. I was drawn to the acorn as a subject for its organic structure and subtle complexity—simple at first glance, yet rich with surface detail and variation. Using charcoal, I focused on observing the way light moves across the rounded body and fractured cap, allowing marks to remain visible and expressive rather than overly refined.

The cast shadow plays an important role in the composition, grounding the object and adding a sense of presence and stillness. I intentionally kept the surrounding space minimal, letting contrast and negative space support the form without distraction. This approach reflects my interest in traditional observational drawing and the discipline of seeing—where restraint and attention are as important as detail.

This original charcoal still life drawing is part of my ongoing exploration of natural forms and classical drawing techniques. It emphasizes texture, tonal range, and the quiet elegance found in everyday objects, rendered through hand-drawn mark-making and careful study.
